1984: when words stop telling the truth

1984: when power reaches into words, thoughts and relationships

In this new episode of Tra Pagine e Legami we explore 1984, George Orwell's novel that still unsettles our present day.

Written in the last century, it still speaks to our times, our fears, our connections, our silences and the invisible forms of control woven into everyday life.

We approach it through one central question: what happens when power seeks to govern not only people but also their words, thoughts and memories?

Not just when we are told what to do.

Not when someone imposes a rule from outside.

But when, little by little, the way we see reality changes, along with the names we give to things and the ways we remember, doubt, choose and love.

Because whoever controls words can restrict thought.

Whoever manipulates memory can rewrite truth.

Whoever turns fear into a habit can convince us that freedom is dangerous and obedience is safety.

This episode is about power, language, surveillance, loneliness, manipulation and freedom.

It is about Winston Smith, Big Brother, Newspeak and doublethink, but also about us: our relationship with screens, information, algorithms, truth and relationships that risk becoming ever more controlled, filtered and fragile.

A reflection on 1984 not as a prophecy to quote casually but as an open wound that we must still listen to: freedom does not die only when it is taken away by force.

Sometimes it begins to die when we stop caring for words, memory, critical thought and the possibility of saying: I am still human.
